"Dear Customers,
In the last weeks several cases of KHV have been reported for Koi supplied from Niigata, first news reached us from Hawaii and later from Germany and Switzerland.
We have been busy collecting all information and visited the breeders involved, contacted customers who received Koi from the farms mentioned, and performed additional testing to make the information as complete as possible.
Our first priority was to work with customers who received or bought Koi from the effected farms, now we would like to share what we know with all our customers.
Case number 1: Koda Koi Farm
Koda Koi was tested as part of customers KHV testing procedure after arrival and tested positive, the Koi was put to sleep straight away to avoid risks, so there were no clinical signs of illness. Ornafish did little business with Koda this autumn, however we had 2 other customers that received Koda Koi. We contacted them and performed test on their Koi, these both tested negative. So we are not 100% sure what is happening here. Koda has put several Nisai at higher temperatures and is stressing them to perform another test in about 1 week time, we will keep you updated.
Case number 2: NNBC
Japanese TV broadcasted a KHV outbreak and soon we found out this was NNBC, as NNBC is also a trader and mixes Koi from other sources he is not part of our breeders network, however 1 of our customers bought 1 Koi there and we asked him to sleep that Koi for safety reasons.
Case number 3: Chogoro
About 1 week later we got the sad news that Chogoro was confirmed with KHV, we contacted all customers with Chogoro Koi and asked them to put these Koi to sleep. Last week the whole farm was cleared out.
Case number 4: Hoshikin
A customer in Switzerland reported KHV in a tank where Hoshikin and Miyatora Koi was mixed. The Swiss authority contacted the Niigata test centre and shared all information. Both farms are tested separately in Niigata and Mie prefecture and Hoshikin Koi was tested positive (Tosai house negative). After several tests Miyatora was declared safe, we also ran an in depended test on Miyatora Koi from our fish house in Holland with big Nisai that tested negative.
Test procedures;
Ornafish has test fish in tanks in most farms, breeders pack a bag with test Koi for each shipment that we ship separate, on arrival in Amsterdam these boxes are send straight from the airport to the Wageningen Bio veterinary research & National reference laboratory for testing.
The test Koi for Chogoro, Hoshikin and Koda tested negative. We also have many customers performing their own test, sharing mixed testing results, KHV testing is not a simple matter with a simple answer.
In autumn where Koi is harvested from so many ponds, and Koi is moving left and right in the farms, held in different houses, even in Koi Vats, and often Koi is chosen straight from the truck it is impossible to test all Koi, our test Koi are swimming in 1 Koi house and are 1 sample within the farm! If the whole farm is infected with KHV it is simple, our test Koi will show it, and the whole farm will be cleared out by the Japanese government, but unfortunate we also have to deal with many incidents where we do not have a clear answer. To be sure 100% we need a positive KHV test and clinical signs of illness, but often the Koi is in a house full with other Koi and waiting, more testing is risky, sleeping the positive tested Koi for safety reasons is then the best choice.
After the recent KHV outbreaks all parties involved in Koi trading need to re think and re ensure their KHV policies. Keep Koi from each farm strictly separate, divide stocks over many systems, so that in case of an unlucky event the damage is controlled to 1 breeder or few Koi. Quarantine Koi at the right temperature so that any disease will show, and only release Koi to hobbyist after throughout quarantine for a minimum of 6-8 weeks.
If those practices are not followed, 1 single Koi from 1 farm that is effected by KHV can cause major damages at the importer or dealer, but also at their customers, and this damage is not insured by any party.
We are contacted with many questions about other farms having KHV problems. As far as we know, from official information and the information we get from the breeders there are at the moment no other breeders suspected of KHV.
We regret that a situation like this gives people a reason to spread more rumours and negativity about breeders or companies, it is in all parties interest to keep the impact of KHV on the Koi Hobby to a minimum to protect the future of our business.
We will update you whenever there are new developments."
